Paper is a derivative of Spigot, which itself is a derivative of Bukkit, both of which are server software for the game Minecraft. Paper brings improved performance and new features compared to Spigot and Bukkit.

The Paper server is particularly appreciated for its ability to handle a large number of plugins, its flexibility, and its performance. It allows Minecraft server administrators to customize and optimize their server in much more detail than the standard Minecraft server.

It also includes a number of patches and performance improvements that can help reduce lag on larger servers. It's important to note that, like Spigot and Bukkit, Paper is meant to be used on multiplayer servers and doesn't bring significant changes to the single-player gaming experience.
