Developped in Java in May 2009, by the most famous swedish on Internet Markus Alekej Persson alias "Notch", Minecraft is initially a "sandbox" game that allow player to build without any limitation. Inspired from games like Dungeon Keeper or Dwarf Frotress, Minecraft has been a big success very quickly. The game is still in developpement, but still has reached 1.5 millions of sold copy.
The base gamemode has been abandoned in favour of the "survival" mode that immerses the player in a fully randomly generated world where he will have to survive against monsters and gather his own resources in order to build his tools, weapons, armors and many other objects.
One of the key features of the game comes from the dynamic generation of the world around the player, each world is generated randomly during the player progression. Each world will remain totally unique and unpredictable. However the decoration is created in a consistent way and with some environments like mountains, beachs, deserts, snow. Worlds don't have any limit, then it's impossible to reach world's border walking straight forward even doing so many weeks.
To survive in Minecraft, you will need to smartly use the environment around you in order to exploit the resources. The first minutes in the game will be the hardest, but Minecraft is still user-friendly. The gathered resources will allow you to protect yourself during the night when creeps and zombies will be you nightmare by building structures more or less complex. Despite the house building, another key feature in Minecraft is the number of possible recipes. Indeed, you'll be allowed to combine many components to make more complex objects.
Caves exploration and mines construction is an important aspect of the game. Most of rare minerals like gold or diamond are located under the ground. You will need to explorer the many tunnels and mines infested by monsters in order to hope finding them.
Minecraft is THE ultimate "sandbox" game if you are creative. Despite the very simple graphics that may discourage some at first sight, the game mechanics and the full liberty will make you love Minecraft.
